Why Grow a Farmhouse Flower Garden?
Do you love filling your home with beautiful flower arrangements—but hate spending a fortune at the store or farmers market every week? A farmhouse flower garden is the perfect way to grow your own blooms right outside your back door.
You don’t need a ton of space either. These flowers can grow beautifully in raised beds, tucked into your veggie garden, or even in containers on your porch. Start them from seed or pick up perennial transplants from your local garden center for blooms that come back year after year.

7 Best Flowers for a Farmhouse Garden

Sunflowers
Sunflowers are what most people think of when they want farmhouse flowers. They’re an annual flower but if seeds fall around where they were the year before then they will usually grow back in that spot!
They’re also gorgeous and did you know they grow in a few varieties? They come in yellow, orange, white, and red colors; mammoth, regular, and miniature sizes; single or branching stems.
I grow the branching stem varieties in my gardens for the pollinators and the single varieties for farmhouse arrangements.

Zinnias
Zinnias are my favorite flowers (and sunflowers) to grow! They come in a variety of colors and they’re easy to grow for beginners.
Just like sunflowers, they will grow in the same spot the following year where the seeds had fallen. My favorite varieties are the Cut and Come Again Mixed Colors, the State Fair Mix, and the White Wedding.

Cosmos
Cosmos are dainty pretty flowers that look great in a vase or mixed with other flowers. They come in a few varieties and colors, which makes them a great option for a cut flower garden. My favorite variety is the Double Click Bicolor Violet.

Daisies
Daisies are perennials, which means they will grow back each year. This makes them an easy choice to grow in a farmhouse garden.
I have not had luck in growing them from seeds so I have bought them from my local garden center. My favorite variety is the classic white Shasta Daisy.

Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susans)
Another perennial, Rudbeckia is a staple to any farmhouse garden. They look great in the landscaping as well. They are beautiful in a vase alone or mixed with other flowers.

Calendula
Calendula is also a perennial and can be used in homemade tinctures, salves, and herbal teas. They’re very easy to start from seed and will come back each year.
They are also gorgeous in a farmhouse arrangement! My favorite varieties are the Pacific Beauty Mix and the Lemonade.

Echinacea (Purple Cone Flower)
Echinacea is a perennial that can also be used in homemade tinctures, salves, and herbal teas. While it comes in a few colors, my favorite is the classic purple color.

All of these flowers look great together in a vase. However, you can use just one variety or mix and match to find your favorite combinations.
You can also add herbs to your farmhouse flower arrangements to make them look more full. Lavender, sage, basil, and dill are some of my favorites! You can give herbs to your chickens too!
